      • the first 4 notes (in the first 5 seconds) – the sustained notes, not the choppy, repeated ones – include 2 intervals of a descending fifth. assuming you know nothing about playing the piano, if you were to play these and count the white keys including the first and last notes (this happens twice in the first 4 notes), it would add up to 5. those opening 4 notes get bounced around (like at the 9 second mark) between the different instruments, on different pitches. it’s a theme on which the whole movement is based

        was this clear? (so much easier to explain this AT THE PIANO!)
